What is the issue with most humans anyway?
I say… it’s the insula.
Why?!
The insula is a fascinating region in the brain! It’s a complex structure involved in various vital functions, including:
- Interoception: The insula processes bodily sensations, such as pain, temperature, hunger, thirst, and respiratory status.
- Emotions: It plays a role in emotional experiences, like empathy, anxiety, and disgust.
- Self–awareness: The insula is linked to our sense of self and body ownership.
- Empathy and compassion: It’s active when we understand and share feelings with others.
- Decision–making: The insula contributes to risk assessment, uncertainty, and decision-making processes.
- Sensorimotor integration: It integrates sensory information from the body and helps regulate movement.
Damage to the insula has been linked to various neurological and psychiatric conditions, such as:
- Emotion regulation difficulties
- Alexithymia (difficulty identifying emotions)
- Empathy impairments
- Interoceptive dysregulation (e.g., misinterpreting bodily sensations)
- Chronic pain and fatigue
The insula is a vital structure that helps us navigate the world, understand ourselves and others, and experience emotions.
Now, do you understand what I am saying?!
The insula is at the center of all human problems, haha.
