Protection in the Grave

• It was narrated that ʿAbdullāh ibn Masʿūd (رضي الله عنه) said:

Whoever reads Tabāraka alladhī biyadihi al-mulk (i.e., Surah al-Mulk) every night, Allah will protect him from the punishment of the grave. At the time of the Messenger of Allah (ﷺ), we used to call it al-Māniʿah (the Protector).
In the Book of Allah, it is a surah which whoever recites it every night has done very well.

• ʿAbdullāh ibn Masʿūd (رضي الله عنه) also reported that the Prophet (ﷺ) said:

“Surat Tabārak (Surah al-Mulk) prevents the punishment of the grave.”

Intercession Until Forgiveness and Entry into Paradise

• Abū Hurayrah (رضي الله عنه) reported that the Prophet (ﷺ) said:

“There is a surah in the Qur’an of thirty verses; it intercedes for a man until he is forgiven, and it is Surat Tabārak (Blessed is He in Whose Hand is the Dominion).”

• Anas (رضي الله عنه) reported that the Prophet (ﷺ) said:

“There is a surah in the Qur’an, not more than thirty verses; it argues on behalf of its companion until it enters him into Paradise, and it is Surah Tabārak.”

The Prophet (ﷺ) Would Recite It Before Sleeping

• Jābir ibn ʿAbdullāh (رضي الله عنه) reported:

The Messenger of Allah (ﷺ) would not sleep until he had recited Surah as-Sajdah (32) and Surah al-Mulk (67).

Footnote

“This Surah is a great surah: Surah Tabārak alladhī bi-yadihi’l-mulk (“Blessed is He in Whose Hand is the dominion”) [Al-Mulk 67:1].

There is also a hadith stating that it interceded for its companion. If the hadith is free from defects, what is meant by this is that the person acted upon the surah and fulfilled its rights, so it interceded for him.

The Qur’an intercedes for its people on the Day of Resurrection.

The Noble Qur’an intercedes for its people on the Day of Resurrection if they act upon it. However, if they neglect it, it becomes evidence against them.

As the Prophet (ﷺ) said: “The Qur’an is either a proof for you or a proof against you.”

The Qur’an is a proof for its people if they act upon it, remain steadfast upon what the Qur’an commands, and preserve it. But whoever neglects it and does not remain steadfast upon its guidance, it becomes evidence against him and one of the causes of his entering the Nār (Fire).

Therefore, it is obligatory upon every believing man and believing woman to give the Qur’an proper care and to act upon it. Whoever acts upon it, it will intercede for him and lead him to Paradise. And whoever neglects it, it will testify against him and become an opponent against him, leading him to the Fire.
