The Noble Companion

,

Al-Shāṭibī (رحمه الله), while describing the virtues of the Qur’an, said:

“It is the best companion whose speech never makes one bored, and whose repetition only increases in beauty.”

Every speech that is repeated eventually becomes tiresome, except for the Noble Qur’an. The more it is recited, the sweeter it becomes, and from it are derived benefits that cannot be counted.

For its recitation, there is a reward of ten good deeds for every letter. Thus, it is the best companion. How could its speech ever become boring when it is the best of speech?

Allah, the Exalted, says:

ٱللَّهُ نَزَّلَ أَحْسَنَ ٱلْحَدِيثِ
“Allah has sent down the best of speech.” (Al-Zumar 39:23)

The phrase “increases in beauty” carries two meanings:

  1. The Qur’an itself becomes more beautiful to the reader through repeated recitation, as its light, sweetness, eloquence, and meanings become increasingly apparent.
  2. The reciter becomes more beautiful through repetition, by acquiring its benefits, manners, guidance, and reward.

May Allah make the Qur’an our faithful companion in this life and our intercessor in the Hereafter.

Aameen!
