The Countless Blessings of Allah
A Sunnah of Gratitude and Praise
An invitation to end each day remembering the blessings we so often overlook…
There is something profoundly humbling about the moment before we fall asleep. The world grows quieter, our worries settle into the corners of our minds, and we are left with the blessings we received, the hardships we endured, and the countless favors of Allah that we may have forgotten to acknowledge.
And in the beauty of the Sunnah, the Prophet (ﷺ) taught us how to end the day: with praise, remembrance, and heartfelt gratitude to Allah.
The Hadith
Anas (may Allah be pleased with him) reported that the Messenger of Allah (ﷺ) said:
“When you go to bed, say:
الْحَمْدُ لِلَّهِ الَّذِي أَطْعَمَنَا وَسَقَانَا، وَكَفَانَا وَآوَانَا، فَكَمْ مِمَّنْ لَا كَافِيَ لَهُ وَلَا مُؤْوِيَ
‘Praise is due to Allah Who fed us, provided us drink, sufficed us and provided us shelter, for many a person there is none to suffice and none to provide shelter.’”
— Sahih Muslim 2715
The Blessings We Have Become Accustomed To
Perhaps one of the greatest tests of receiving blessings is that we gradually become accustomed to them.
What once brought us immense happiness eventually becomes part of our routine. The food we eat, the water we drink, the bed we sleep in, and the safety we experience become so familiar that we forget how precious they truly are.
We begin to perceive them as ordinary, when in reality, each one is a mercy.
Somewhere tonight, a person will go to sleep hungry.
Somewhere, a family will struggle to find shelter.
Somewhere, someone will lie awake wishing for the very peace and security that we may take for granted.
This is not a reminder to feel guilty for the blessings Allah has given us. Rather, it is an invitation to become more conscious of them.
To recognize that what we call an ordinary day may be filled with extraordinary mercy.
To understand that the ability to eat, drink, rest, and feel safe is not something we should ever consider insignificant.
And to remember that gratitude begins when we stop looking at our blessings as things we are entitled to and start recognizing them as gifts from our Lord.
Alhamdulillah: A Few Words, A Lifetime of Meaning
The beauty of this supplication lies in its simplicity.
Before we surrender ourselves to sleep, we are invited to surrender our hearts to gratitude.
We praise Allah for providing us with nourishment, for quenching our thirst, for granting us sufficiency, and for giving us shelter.
These are blessings we experience every single day, yet how often do we pause to thank the One who provides them?
We worry about what we do not have, grieve over what we have lost, and long for what remains beyond our reach. In the process, we sometimes overlook the very blessings that sustain us.
A meal on our table.
A glass of water within our reach.
A roof above our heads.
A place where we can close our eyes without fear.
These are not insignificant things. They are favors from Allah, bestowed upon us through His mercy.
And the words of the Prophet (ﷺ) gently remind us that while we may have enough to meet our needs, there are people who have no one to provide for them and no place to shelter them.
What a beautiful reminder to let gratitude soften our hearts and make us more compassionate toward those who are struggling.
Gratitude Does Not Require a Perfect Life
Perhaps the day was difficult.
Perhaps something we prayed for did not happen.
Perhaps our hearts carry worries that no one else knows about.
Yet even on such days, there may still be a reason to say Alhamdulillah.
Not because our pain is insignificant. Not because we must pretend that everything is fine. And certainly not because gratitude requires us to deny our hardships.
But because Allah’s mercy is not limited to the moments when life unfolds according to our wishes.
We can be hurting and still be grateful.
We can be waiting and still praise Him.
We can carry unanswered prayers in our hearts while acknowledging the countless blessings He has already bestowed upon us.
Sometimes, Alhamdulillah is spoken with a smile. Sometimes, it is whispered through tears.
And sometimes, it is all a weary heart can manage before closing its eyes.
But Allah knows what those words carry.
Before You Sleep Tonight
Before you close your eyes tonight, take a moment to reflect.
Think of the food you ate today, the water you drank, and the place where you will rest.
Think of the countless provisions that reached you without your having to ask for each one individually.
Think of the blessings you noticed, and the ones you did not.
Remember those who are deprived of what you have been given. Let that remembrance deepen your compassion and inspire you to share from the provisions Allah has entrusted to you.
Gratitude should not end with words upon our tongues. It should find its way into how we treat others, how generously we give, and how humbly we live.
The beauty of this Sunnah is that it transforms an ordinary moment before sleep into an opportunity for remembrance, reflection, and closeness to Allah.
May Allah make us among those who recognize His blessings before they are gone, praise Him in times of ease and difficulty, and never allow the familiarity of His favors to make our hearts heedless.
May He grant food to the hungry, shelter to the homeless, relief to those in hardship, and peace to every troubled heart.
And may we never lay our heads upon our pillows without remembering the One who provided us with the blessings that made that rest possible.
Aameen!
Alhamdulillah for the blessings we recognize, the blessings we overlook, and the blessings we may never fully comprehend.
Alhamdulillah, always and forever….
